World Cup Beer! Those Japanese think of everything…

Fancy some of this then? Kirin have produced a World Cup themed beer can, or should I say a beer can with the national team jersey design on it.

What better way for the beer inclined Blue Samurai fan to show his support than drinking these while shouting at the TV!

Apparently it’s not a new beer, but the same stuff in a different can, but hey it would be enough to convince me to buy some for the international beer fest that my house will be for the World Cup! Or at least it would if it was sold here in England – I can still get hold of some Sapporo and Asahi however which will be accompanying me on the sofa when Japan open their tournament on June 14th.

Asahi > Kirin in my opinion. I lived in Japan for the two previous world cups, and I believe there was a world cup can for those two as well (I can’t really remember). However, you would be absolutely correct in saying that drinking and yelling at the TV are favorite pastimes. During the 2006 world cup, my wife and I could tell those in our マンション that were on satellite because the yelling at the TV came about 5 seconds after ours did.

totally off subject, but has anyone else noticed how great Takuya Nozawa has looked towards the end of last season and definitely this season? I know we promised to be more positive towards Okada, but this guy has been 2 or 3 times as effective as Okubo, Tamada, Yano, or even some of the better/more obvious Japanese selections of late…he cannot stop scoring for the Antlers out of midfield and shows a Giggs-like touch on the ball and threat from the wing. I don’t think he’s ever played for the national team, but is playing like he’s a starter for me. I’m not an Antlers fan either, I’m for Kawasaki Frontale. Sorry that’s random, I was just watching J-League highlights over the weekend.

Sapporo would be my Japanese beer of choice…possibly swayed by the memory of a drunken day at the Sapporo Biiru-en!
