The morning after the day before – Reflections on an opening win

Various after match quotes from yesterday’s little party in Bloemfontein…
Takeshi Okada…
“Cameroon are a side that are very gifted technically and play at a very high level physically. We were prepared for a very tough game. I told the players they couldn’t just be defensive and they had to alternate between attacking spells and defensive ones. In the first half, we had a few difficult moments, but we put lots of pressure on them and were able to score. After that, they attacked us, but our defence did a good job. I think we’ll need to be more aggressive in the future, though. This match is only our preparation for the second one and we still need to improve. I don’t think it was a great success – what’s important is the next game.”
That’s actually quite a reasonable measured response from Okada. Not getting carried away and being realistic about the parts of the match Japan struggled in. He also said…
“The final whistle is just the starting whistle for the next game. There are many things that we still have to do.”
I’m liking the attitude being shown here – I’m almost surprised that I’m saying that, but there you go…
“But we won’t be able to win against the Netherlands playing at this level. We have to think about preparing for the next game,”
Realism from Okada!

Match winner Keisuke Honda had the following to say…
“Our strength was our collective force, we kept going for the 90 minutes and defended really solidly and that was the key. For my goal, the ball in was very good so I told myself to be calm enough to take it. I knew that when we had a chance we had to take it.”
…and he did! He continues…
“This goal was a nice birthday present for me. I am so happy now and there is a great atmosphere in the team. We were able to stop Cameroon’s attacking players and I think that was why we were able to get a good result. We had confidence before the game.
“Of course we played badly in the friendly matches but we didn’t mind about this because they were not so important. We were only concentrating on today.”
Keeper Eiji Kawashima put things rather more succinctly…
“It was a dangerous game and I’m relieved it’s over.”
Not as relieved as I was at the final whistle I can tell you! Ok, maybe he had a bigger vested interest than me, but I was still very relieved!
A good match at the back for Marcus Tulio Tanaka, and his pearls of wisdom were…
“Cameroon are a very strong team with many players at different clubs around the world. It was very difficult but we stuck together in defence and kept them out.”
And what of the opposition? Paul Le Guen, that master tactician who kept Samuel Eto’o - one of the very best in the world – on the periphery…
“My regret is that my players weren’t able to play at the level they can. I think they were too nervous in the first half. They fought well afterwards but in an unorganised manner. We missed an incalculable number of easy balls. This is my biggest disappointment. It’s very frustrating to see your team play at a level that’s beneath them.”
And Cameroon midfielder Jean Makoun added his thoughts…
“Japan defended really well. They put us under pressure and didn’t succumb to our pressure. We didn’t attack with enough conviction but we did better in the second half and created chances. We lacked precision.”
