With the World Cup starting tomorrow, Japan’s secret weapon in the war to beat Australia, Croatia and Brazil in Group F has just arrived in Germany.
He is their unofficial mascot called Rommel.

How can Japan in this day and age allow its soccer team to have a live
dog mascot
named Rommel (after the Nazi field marshall of World War II “fame”) in
Germany today for the
2006 World Cup? It boggles the mind. Shame on Japan!
And why has no intl media picked up this shameful story?

A Japanese friend in his 40s, in Osaka, wrote me today, re this issue: “About the dog’s name, I agree with you. But, I guess whoever named the dog Rommel didn’t know that it was the name of a Nazi’s high ranking official. And nobody seems to care, right? (Otherwise, German media would have said something).”
And another friend in Tokyo, a longtime expat, wrote and said “Japanese give their dogs all kinds of strange names, and many of them don’t make much sense in English…”
So maybe this is all a tempest in a dog dish!
